Is Thelema or, Insert Non-Christian Paradigm Here, Satanism?

Is Thelema Satanism?

Is Thelema Satanism? Would Thelema have existed if Christianity had not come before it? If so, what would it look like?

Si Vales, Valeo

I realize that it is very butch to say you are a Satanist these days. However, you may as well call Thelema Christianity, since Satanism is a Christian concept that has been butchered for over 2000 years.

You have to look at belief systems through the eyes of social anthropology/mythology/religion/philosophy/whatever before you can see that each religious movement is a link in a long chain going back to the first time humans worshiped something. That way we can trace our beliefs back to the archetypal beginnings of symbols and maybe, if we are lucky, manage to create some unique errors, instead of simply repeating the same ones over and over again.

To look at Thelema as something that was created in a vacuum is a huge folly. Why? Because we are still affected by the archetypal symbols of the paradigms before. In fact, those symbols remain consistent. It is only their interpretation that changes to accommodate each generation’s struggles and joy.

If we treat Thelema as something in and by itself, we don’t get the full picture. In fact, you get a lot of distortions and silly assumptions about who we are and what our purpose is.

Listen, I do not disagree with the condition of the world or Christianity today, but that is neither here nor there. A philosophical approach to Thelema, without the knee-jerk reactions from other religions is better than just ignoring Christianity because you feel it has damned us all to an existence of slavery. But doesn’t Thelema have a lot to say about slavery an its role in the world as well? Don’t be so fooled by the peer pressure of people who are Thelemites in name only because they see it as a sort of fad.

If you refuse to look at Christianity because you think as a Thelemite you can’t be bothered, then you can forget about Gnosis or knowing what that means in any cosmic sense. Gnosis is a lot like the IXth Degree Secret. The people who think they know it, believe it to be a cosmic joke. But those who really understand it and its relation to other planes show immense reverence toward it, and work it to really great effect because they “get it.”

“Refuse the Law, you put yourself beyond its pale. It is the Law that Jesus Christ, or rather the Gnostic tradition of which the Christ legend is a degradation, attempted to teach; but nearly every word he said was misinterpreted and garbled by his enemies, particularly by those who called themselves his disciples.” (Crowley 2004). – Genesis Libri AL. Chapter VIII

You have mentioned that you believe that Christianity is a slave religion. I can’t, and will not argue that point. But I would like to ask you a question: In the Book of the Law we are told that Thelemites are either Kings or slaves. Which are you and why do you feel that way? Do you think that because you say you are a Thelemite your are immune to the slavery it foretells? Are you one of the “secret and unknown?”

Here is another question: What would the ideal Thelemic King look like? Bill Gates? Neitzsche, Steve Jobs? The man behind the curtain in politics?

And if that is who you THINK they are, then who are you and why? And what is your relationship to them?

It isn’t enough to assume these lofty proclamations are true just because The Book of the Law says them. How do you know it is speaking to you? They are there to motivate us to greatness. Not to be taken for granted so we can waste our potential by sitting on our hands and claiming to be special.

Maybe this is what it means to be soldiers that play and wont fight?

Furthermore, I find it curious that you use the words “good” and “bad” to describe new and old aeons. At this writing, the way that the New Aeon is manifesting itself on earth is anything but great in the grand scheme of things. Probably not any worse than the last aeon. We have become more proficient at killing one another either by force or legal precedence. I often wonder if Thelemites and magicians in general are paying attention outside of their magical circles. You can’t split your magical life and your regular life, which includes politics, because you are affected by it.
